Diesel Tuning – Why do it?

Late model vehicles have been programmed by the manufacturer to be compatible with a large worldwide market which also comes with a large variation in climates, the purpose of use, nature of environments, and terrains.

We have found that the common rail engines, although having much more power than the early fuel systems, are very conservative on power at the standard setting.

Being conservative on power output does not always equal the best possible fuel economy to suit all conditions and driving styles.

To get the best from your diesel vehicle, we tune the common rail engine to increase torque, power outputs, driveability, and economy. We can customise these to YOUR driving style, preferences, and use of the vehicle.

How do we do it?

Here at T and A Mechanical we currently offer both ECU remapping and tuning by use of the Unichip.

ECU Remap

We use the latest technology for ECU remapping to modify:

  • Fuel Pressure.
  • Fuel Injection Timing.
  • Ignition Timing.
  • Absolute Boost & Delivery.
  • Throttle Input Maps.
  • Torque Limiting Maps.

We access this data via the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) port and our electronic tuning tools and equipment. These values can be modified to better suit the individual customers driving style and needs. The vehicle is then run on our AWD Dyno to test the new tune, and modifications are made as needed until the result is achieved.

A pre tune Dyno run is always carried out, with post tune Dyno runs also done to show you in graph form how much improvement has been achieved (predominantly measuring the increase in power and torque).

Can I Revert My Vehicle To Standard Tuning?

If for any reason, you wish to return your vehicle to its factory standard tuning (or how it was before the remap) - we will always keep a secured version of the file as a backup. It is simply a matter of replacing the tuned file with the original one and we will do this at no extra cost to you.

Unichip

The Unichip, unlike most "chips", has the ability to make changes to all major engine management signals in order to achieve greater gains at a safe consistent level. Most "chips" will plug into one or two sensors (fuel rail pressure, throttle, or boost sensor) and not actually have the ability to adjust the full required signals in a 3D map format. Therefore drastically limiting the gains in power and torque and in some cases can actually create unsafe AFR levels (air-fuel ratios) which can result in major engine damage.

The Unichip is a plug-in or hardwire ECU and injector driver module that can be fitted directly between the factory ECU and wiring harness without making any permanent changes to the factory ECU software and. The power module captures the signals from the engine sensors allowing us to adjust and then send them on to the factory ECU to then deliver the required air-fuel and timing to get the desired power and torque.

The product can be removed at any time and the system is back to standard with no other work required, eliminating the risk of damage to factory wiring or software. The Unichip can also be moved to another vehicle if the customer wants to upgrade or change vehicles.

Note: When moving Unichip to another vehicle, it will need to be installed and updated to suit the new vehicle prior to use.

Unichip also has the option of a MAP switch, which allows the customer up to 5 separate tunes to suit their requirements, which they can change at any time with the touch of a button. The MAP switch comes in both a hardwired switch with a control unit mounted in the vehicle or a Bluetooth MAP switch option. This also gives you 5 different tunes and is controlled via an app downloaded on your mobile device. Both are Apple iOS and Android supported and can be on as many devices as you like. (Note - Only one device can control the switch at any time).

Benefits of Diesel Tuning with a Unichip

Where to start! The main thing we look for in a correct diesel tune is increased power and torque whilst maintaining a safe AFR (air-fuel ratio). To do this we can increase throttle response, reduce turbo lag, increase boost pressure, and adjust injector duration and timing. This delivers a significant improvement to the burn processes in the combustion chamber resulting in a larger more usable torque curve which will truly transform the performance of your vehicle.

With the increase in torque, it allows the engine to respond much easier and to reach its required cruising parameters with much less throttle application which can result in improved fuel efficiency. With the Unichip, we can enhance these efficiencies by tailoring multiple maps to suit different driving conditions and styles e.g. Towing, High power, Efficient, low boost, high boost, 4WD low speed, winching, and even immobilizer. Having these options also makes it much safer as we can select the map to suit the condition and know the engine has a much greater chance of operating to its full safe potential e.g. Towing map.

If the engine is put under extensive load for extended periods of time the Unichip will still protect the engine from exceeding limiting paramotors by automatically reducing the modified map back to standard. Once parameters have returned to normal, it will then ramp back up to the selected map setting.

Unichip comes with a 3-year product warranty and has a 30-day money-back guarantee. There is an extensive network of dealers Australia-wide.
